Mophie Finally Made a Laptop Charger and It’s Amazing

portable laptop battery: Mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL

As someone who frequently finds herself with a dead smartphone battery at the worst times ever, Mophie’s portable smartphone batteries have been a constant fixture in my purse for a long time now. I’ve patiently had my fingers crossed for a similar charger for my laptop, because— no shocker— I’m constantly running that device down too.

I’ve been wary to buy a portable laptop battery from a brand I don’t know (and isn’t trusted by Apple), but when I run out of juice halfway through a cross country flight, it’s not pretty.

The tech gods must have heard my prayers, because Mophie recently released the powerstation USB-C XXL, a portable charging station that not only fuels your laptop, but also multiple other devices at once. The 19,500mAh rechargeable battery is as strong as they come, sending up to a 30W charge to USB-C laptops. That means you get up to 14 hours of extra power when you’re charging your laptop alone and up up to 66 hours of extra power on a single iPhone (there’s a USB-A port as well, giving you lots of options).

Like other Mophie chargers, you just plug in the powerstation overnight to fully juice up, then it’s ready to work as a mobile unit when you’re on the go.

A portable laptop battery is nothing new, but this is the first that’s designed specifically for Apple by a trusted partner. Apple is promoting it big time in their store, so that inspires a ton of confidence that it’s not going to fry my laptop, or break and leave me high and dry.  I also love that the Mophie powerstation is wrapped in a protective gray flannel that keeps it from scratching my other devices when I travel, and it’s sooo much lighter and less bulky than traveling with my charging cable in my carry-on. It’s liberating to be freed from outlets until you get where you’re going.

Oh, and my son wants me to tell you that’s it’s a gem for charging your Nintendo Switch, which has a miserable battery life on the go.

The one downside is, the powerstation is only compatible with MacBooks from 2015 forward and devices with USB-C or USB-A connectors. So if you have an older laptop, it’s not for you. But if you’re traveling with kids and have a pile of tablets and smartphones that might need charging while you’re on the go, the powerstation USB-C XXL is a one-stop juice shop.

Do you use portable batteries? Are you always running down your laptop? Let me know in the comments!
