How I’m keeping my curly hair cool this summer

We’ve been spending lots of time by the beach, where it’s a bit cooler, but when I’m in the valley and the temperature is in the 90s (or worse!) there’s not much I can do to keep my curly hair cute. Before long, it’s in a bun, or a ponytail, and begins to resemble a broom head, or a Pomeranian.

But the temperature isn’t the biggest adversary when it comes to my curly hair: Sunscreen, chlorine, and heat are all trying to get the best of my mop. Here are some of the products I use to keep my curls under control.

For Hydration

Just like I’m not drinking enough water (I’m tryingggg!), my curly hair isn’t getting enough moisture. This moisturizing primer goes on before your styling products, and its aloe, shea butter, argan oil and other exotic fruit oils seal in moisture for the day. Plus, it smells like a vacation

For super-extra hydration

I’m trying to do a hair mask each Sunday, to finish off the week with a big hit of deep conditioning so I don’t look like a Brillo pad as I head into the new week. It’s not super thick, it washes out weightlessly, and will even detangle your curls if they’re mad from being in a hair tie all weekend.

Chlorine needs to be washed out. Otherwise, it damages your curls and changes your texture. Then it dries them out and turns them green. So, I know you’re busy having fun, but… wash it out. This cleansing serum is like makeup remover for your head— it will remove any gunky chlorine or sunscreen build-up and get your hair ready to be conditioned.

For sun protection

We’ve all been conditioned to coat our skin head to toe with sunscreen before we step outside, but most of us leave our hair vulnerable. This scalp and hair mist has UV protection that will prevent color fading, heat damage, and sunburn for your exposed scalp. Never used to think about this but now it’s a must-have.

For Frizz-Free drying

Love love love these towels and they’re now the only thing I blot and scrunch my hair with after a shower. Super-absorbent material and ultra-fine fibers that dry your hair without friction means that you cut back drastically on the frizz, split ends, and breakage… not to mention blow dry time. I really try and let my hair air dry as much as I can in the summer, but these towels give me ahead start.

To revive your curls on day 2 (or 3)

My curls will flatten out overnight, or if I’ve pony-tailed them for too long during the day. This genius spray magically revives them between wash days. Just spray and scrunch and you’re back to day one quality curliness. It’s a scalp-soother too. And guess what?! For After Hours Assistance

OK, admittedly this is a bit of a splurge but I cannot even begin to tell you how much I am loving it. This memory foam pillow with the black silky pillowcase is naturally hypoallergenic, gentler on skin and hair (my curls are thankful), and promotes deeper, more restful sleep in every imaginable sleep position. The silk pillowcase does not absorb moisture and oils which means fewer breakouts, and it even promises to fight the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Not sure how much of that is true, but I have noticed that sleeping on silk does make a difference with my hair, and the memory foam pillow is so comfy to sleep on that I think I’m getting better quality sleep.

Which is good news, because all that frolicking in the sun is hard work.
