I haven’t entirely mastered it yet, and some nights I forget to make it happen, but lately I’ve been trying to find a few minutes before bed to write down some goals for the following da. And because Slow Down has been this month’s mantra, I have been using that time to plan slower moments in the week.
With this time of year being as crazy as it is, especially for my daughter who has myriad sports and classes on her schedule. Lately, I’m more chauffeur than mom, and I miss being able to just decompress and enjoy one another’s company.
So since the weather is perpetually beautiful in Los Angeles, I’ve been taking our family dinners al fresco more often— being outside, hearing the birds and the palm trees rustling, is good medicine after a day of speeding around town in the car. And this past week, the boys were both busy, so it was girls night.
So with a mound of her favorite mac and cheese, a simple salad, and some hot chocolate, we ate a slow, easy dinner together and did some laughing and some long overdue catching up. Not a phone or any other screen in sight.
The ambiance would have been pretty enough at dusk, but I took things over the top with a few of TIKI Brand’s Clean Burn Tabletop Firepieces, which feature a beautiful, bright flame with less smoke, no soot, and when you fill them with Clean Burn fuel, they’re safe enough to put right on the table. It was like having a mini firepit right on the table to keep things warm and visually interesting.
The TIKI Brand Clean Burn tabletop system is easy to set up: Pour 4 oz. of plant-based Clean Burn fuel (read: no petroleum, no stinky odors) into a reuseable Roundwick burner-system and you’ve got 3 hours of burn time with dramatically less smoke and no soot or stink to mess up dinner. The flame is bright and lovely to eat by. We sat outside longer than the 7 1/2 minutes it usually takes for her to scarf down her dinner.
After dinner, we kept things going outside, grabbing a blanket as things got cooler, then jumping in the jacuzzi to get cozy before bed. It’s definitely going to be a race to the finish of this school year with a lot going on, but I’m looking forward to carving out more slow time for the family, and making sure us girls have some solo time too.
