As most parents will attest, date night turns into something very different when you have kids.
Priorities have shifted from finding a deep booth that we could sip cocktails in to getting through dessert without yawning. I remember fondly some of our favorite before-kids haunts, we’d regularly wind through Topanga Canyon to our favorite seafood place, or up the coast for Italian food where we could hear the waves crashing while we slurped our linguini.
Now, date night is much more pragmatic. With two busy careers and two fabulous kids who we love spending time with, it gets tougher and tougher to justify going out by ourselves. And yet, date night is time to have adult conversations, time to discuss how we’re navigating the family ship, and time to just hold hands, exhale a bit, and recapture a bit of our relationship that gets sidelined by all the goings-on. Prioritizing date night is like a Hallmark card that says, I haven’t forgotten about us— us is still very, very important.
This year, we’ll be celebrating Valentine’s Day a bit late, due to travel schedules and a kid friend who will be staying with us during the whole long weekend. That’s OK by me— I’m just as happy to avoid the prix-fixe menus and exorbitant roses, and do V-Day a little later… date shifting is par for the course these days. Whenever the date, we always need a sitter (I wish my parents or in-laws lived nearby, but they don’t) so we’re always on the hunt for one we love and trust. I’ve long been a fan of Urban Sitter, a service that places babysitters and nannies who have been background-checked and rated by families you know (it’s hooked into Facebook, so you can see whose been hired by people you trust).
We’re giving away a $100 gift card plus a year subscription to Urban Sitter, and there are a few ways to enter in the widget below. Hope you all have a lovely Valentine’s Day!
The winner is… Melida! Congrats Melida!!
