If you have anxiety attacks about what might be lurking in your mattress or kitchen sponge, put your disinfectant down and read on…
What bacteria are lurking on your cutting board? What’s growing on your sponge? What’s crawling around on the mattress? When you find out, you really wish you hadn’t asked. While it’s true that there are bacteria, viruses and fungi all around us, most of them aren’t harmful. But sometimes they can make us sick or cause allergies, which is why I’ve tracked down tech gadgets that get your home squeaky clean. Like, white glove test clean. Disinfected to within an inch of its life clean. Relax, you can take off that surgical mask now.
Gross: Bugs in the Bed
Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the 2 million dust mites living in your mattress bother you. Or the fact that they poop 20 times a day. The Dyson V6 Mattress (pictured above), is a handheld vacuum made with a powerful suction to whoosh up the whole disgusting mess— the mites, the human dead skin they feed on, and the poop they produce. The HEPA filtration system captures 99.97 percent of particles so you can sleep easy.
Gross: Funky Phones
Cell phones have 18 times more bacteria on them than the handle to the door of a public restroom. And you hold that phone onto your face. Ugh. The PhoneSoap Charger uses two UV-C lights to sanitize your phone in about four minutes, and can also recharge your phone via the USB port. It’s compatible with iPhone 5, 6, Android, Windows Phone, Samsung and Blackberry phones, and can sanitize other small items, like credit cards, keys and pacifiers.
Gross: Scooping Cat Litter by Hand
Cat owners are supposed to scoop out litter boxes twice a day. But if you don’t enjoy trolling in search of little anti-treasures, try an automatic litter box like the Litter-Robot. Here’s how it works: The cat enters the cave-like device, does its business, and leaves. The robot waits 7 minutes for the litter to absorb the waste, then it rotates, removing the clumps and sorting them into a bottom drawer for easy, bagged removal. Where are you in this picture? Blissfully ignoring the whole thing. Just empty the waste drawer every few days.
Gross: Grimy Windows
Like a high-tech lamprey, the Winbot suctions onto glass doors and windows. It loosens dirt, squeegees it off and dries the glass. If you’re feeling really lazy, use the remote control so that you can turn on the window-polishing robot from your prone position on the couch.
Gross: Surfaces Teeming with Microbes
Luke Skywalker has his lightsaber; we wield similar power with the CleanWave Sanitizing Wand. It uses UV-C light to kill icky microbes like the influenza virus, mold and E. Coli. Use it on keyboards, TV remotes, pillows, couches and countertops, without needing chemical cleaners. May the force of clean be with you.
