I’ve been noticing a pattern lately. It turns out that many of my favorite fashion labels are based right here in LA! I can’t remember a time where so many Los Angeles brands appointed my wardrobe, but there’s just something that fits about these local designers. Their pieces are relaxed, simple, and feminine. They feel coastal, yet modern. They’re unadorned, but incredibly stylish. I could go on. And guess what, I will! The following is a love letter to my favorite LA fashion brands, with links to some of my picks from each. If you spot me on Instagram or Snapchat (username: carleyknob), you’ll likely see me wearing a faded tee, a cropped skinny, or a jumper from one of the below labels.
I’m never mad at a stripe, and I’ve been collecting fresh, nautical pieces from Amour Vert for a while now. Not only are they local, but they’re sustainable— using super-soft organic cottons and non-toxic dyes. In addition to all-things-striped, you’ll find silky/flirty dresses, cute rompers, and other easy-to-wear pieces. I’ve chosen a few of my favorite pieces below, but their website curates sustainable designs from other brands as well.
You might not know Clare V.‘s handbags by name, but if you’re an LA native, there’s no doubt you’ve seen a friend wearing one of her iconic clutches. Her line has expanded to include clothing, sunglasses, and even a luxurious leather backgammon set (that was a splurge when we moved into our new house, and has become a permanent fixture on our coffee table). Clare V.’s Paris-meets-Los-Angeles aesthetic is simple, yet elegant. I have been carrying her clutches, and now larger totes, for years. Her pieces are the kind you can wear with the most causal T-shirt and jeans, and then wear out with a sexy cocktail dress— few bags are as versatile. Each season she reinvents each shape with beautiful colors, stripes and finishes (that perforated white leather is EVERYTHING).
I kept bumping into AMO online, and finally bought a few pieces. Needless to say, I’m happy. Strategically cropped jeans, perfect cut-offs, sexy army fatigues (obsessed with that jacket!), and fun “twist” jeans with cute hems in great washes plus white.
Mother’s been around for a while, but I’ve only just discovered how well their denim fits for myself. I grabbed a jean jacket that doubles as a shirt, and before I knew it, I had amassed a little collection of their undone hem jeans, cheeky t-shirts, and gauzy blouses. Everything is simultaneously relaxed, yet oozes sex appeal. I mean, if you can rock those overalls with the string back? Meow.
Vrai and Oro
Vrai & Oro wants to give you beautiful jewelry without the markups, and in my book, every piece is a winner: Simple, minimal, layerable pieces in gold, rose gold, and silver, with sweet diamond details and just a bit of edge. And with prices the way they are, they’re easy to collect.
I’m not sure I’m hot enough to wear L’Agence, but they haven’t kicked me out of their Melrose Place boutique yet, so I guess that’s a good sign! Everything they do is so sexy, from their killer skinny jeans (that have the perfect amount of stretch), to their silky blouses that have become a staple of my casual/work wardrobe. Love their maxi dresses and touches of leather that I know are coming this fall/winter, but there’s lots of need-to-haves on sale this season that I don’t want to miss (my faves below).
Ragdoll is chasing a fantasy I often have: The perfect sweatshirt. Faded blacks, strategic rips, provocative lace-ups, and touches of camo and leopard make this line girly, comfy and irresistible all at the same time. I’m a regular haunt at their LA store, and am so smitten with this line that I even bought their perfume (it’s gorgeous).
NewbarK reached into my head and put together my dream shoe collection, and everything is covered: Cute ankle boots, spartan sandals, and soft, comfy loafers. It’s the antithesis to the spiky heel, in a minimalist palette of white, brown, black. Everything’s casual, and nothing begs for your attention— just beautiful, simple shoes that compliment every causal, comfortable outfit.
Don’t let the “NY” in their URL fool you: While Industry Standard is conceived in New York, their premium jeans are made right here in Los Angeles. They’re an online-only company with a simple mission: Create a perfect pair of jeans for a price that doesn’t break the bank. Affordable options with impeccable tailoring, this line includes a boyfriend, a mid-rise, a skinny, and a high-rise for every body and style. I find myself not only bookmarking every piece, but looking to their website for styling ideas.
OK, this one is for the boys, so I won’t be wearing any of their pieces (though I kinda dig that scarf, now that I think about it). But I have one of their market bags (mine says “Los Angeles”, but they have ones for dozens of cities across the US. In addition to these chic burlap bags, I love their candles and luggage… and I’m eyeing some pieces for my man.
