When I graduated from college and decided to move to another country (and to the opposite coast) it all seemed like a grand idea…
I never regret that grand plan more than when I’m not with my dad on Father’s Day. Of course, with kids of my own, my priority is to make sure their dad has a great day, but I feel torn not being with my own dad.
I owe so much of who I am to my father, especially as I spread my entrepreneurial wings later in my life. When I was growing up, he helmed multiple businesses from his sky-high office with a view of the world and boat-sized desk. His work life, and he himself, always seemed larger-than-life. But I never felt second place to his work: Somehow, he was always at important events, and I never remember him not being home for dinner. I also never remember him bringing the stress of work through the door— I definitely think of him when I take deep breaths and make a conscious effort not to spray the day’s anxieties on my family after a long day.
The best part of our relationship, by far, has been watching him become a grandfather. My sister and I often exchange looks (as he finishes the umpteenth Lego set or board game), as if to say, “was he like this with us?” He’s got a whole new reserve of energy for his grandkids, getting down on the floor and playing with them for hours, making up ridiculous bedtime stories, telling goofy riddles and teaching them 50’s doo-wap songs. It’s one of the true joys of my life to watch their relationship blossom and evolve as my kids get older.
This Father’s Day, we’ll all be together— my kids, their father and my parents. And while we’ll be exchanging some great Father’s Day gifts (some of which are in the list below), it’s really just present enough that I’ll get to give him a squeeze and tell him just how much I love him, in person.
Hope you can find some inspiration in my favorite gifts below, tech or otherwise. And Happy Father’s Day to you and your dad!
