Did you forget about your home in the back to school rush?

Sure, your kids need backpacks, notebooks, and tablets, but have you thought about whether or not your home is ready for the school year? The truth is, having your space wired for their success is much more crucial than you think.

This year, to make sure our house was technically ready, I headed to Home Depot, where I snagged two products that are just what the back to school season calls for.

Back to school: Home Depot First, the Deco M5 Whole-Home Wi-Fi System takes your at-home WiFi from sluggish to stellar. It comes with multiple units you place in rooms throughout the house and establishes a mesh network between them. That’s tech-speak for “the connection ends up being strong and seamless in every room” (three units will nicely cover 2,400 to 4,500 square feet). So your two kids can be on opposite sides of the abode focusing on their assignments (not teasing each other) and no one is in a dead zone.

It also provides parental controls so you can control what they do (and don’t!) see online and comes with antivirus and malware protection, so there will be no crash situations that result in tears (and subsequent “my dog ate my homework” excuses). Plus the whole system is easy to set up, with guided visuals right in the Deco app, which gives you a bird’s eye view of your usage, security threats, and how fast your internet is at any given time.

The kids aren’t the only ones with internet needs, of course. And I don’t want their homework to preclude me from catching up on a series or two, or finishing a presentation of my own. Deco’s robust dual-band wifi sees to it that I can enjoy a Breaking Bad binge while the kids research their chemistry projects.

Back to school: Home Depot Another part of my back to school arsenal? The Honeywell Lyric C2 1080p Indoor Round Wi-Fi Security Camera, which records HD video and saves up to 24 hours of live recordings (can be upgraded to save 7 or 30 days). This way, I can keep track of live house happenings and even look back at things I missed while I was away… whether I was running errands or running to NYC! The two-way talk feature is helpful when I see a kid eating chips on the couch, or a dog shredding my favorite throw blanket.

The Lyric C2 sends me mobile alerts when it detects crying (genius for new moms) or compatible smoke alarms (genius all around). Plus the AES 256-Bit Encryption technology ensures that what happens in my house is not for prying eyes to see.

No, it doesn’t yet provide math tutoring, but maybe by next year?
