My friends and family know that I’ve always been smitten with interior design, and that my style (and throw pillow collection) is always evolving. Increasingly on the blog I’ve been sharing my views on how technology plays into current home and fashion trends, and I’m always highlighting apps and gadgets that are beautifully designed— there are so many companies designing products for the way we live, functionally and aesthetically.

Today, I’m kicking this all into high gear, and revealing my first-ever room remodel! We cleared a bedroom at the back of our house and transformed it into a High Tech Guest Room. I set out to create a space that, first and foremost, does not look “techy” at all. I think that in a well-designed space, the tech should disappear, leaving only the functionality and comfort that it provides. Secondly, I wanted a space that was very comfortable: I know it might seem weird, but I really, really enjoy houseguests, so I wanted the room to be more inviting and luxe than a hotel. Not in the satin sheets and antique furniture way, but in the when can we come back here kind of way.

So follow me on my very first room tour, and I’ll show you all places where tech is hiding, and all the other places where it’s out in full view, adding to the beauty of the space.  Hope you like it!

Enjoying breakfast in bed is one of life’s best perks: I leave a Kindle like this one in my guest room with a pile of books on it, so guests can get lost in Hemmingway, or read Holly Madison’s new tell-all… no judgement.

The tight space on the right side of the bed called for a small bedside table just big enough to put a glass of water on. A hanging sconce frees up even more table space.

Wireless headphones are connected to the television so our guests can watch late night TV without disturbing us (or each other).

Samsung’s wireless charging pad is a great place to drop a compatible phone to charge it up after a long day, no cable required.

choosing a mattress: tempur-pedic

The Tempur-Pedic mattress feels like sinking into a cloud… a supportive, ergonomic cloud. And the Tempur-Pedic adjustable bed frame lets you elevate your head and feet, and even gives you a massage. Guests can set the memory buttons with their own preferences. It’s a wonder anyone leaves the bed.

The left side of the bed had a bit more space, and was a great opportunity to add storage. I like to keep my winter clothes in this room, but I clear them out when guests are coming. Some light to read by, an alarm clock that is easy to use (and won’t shriek at you in the morning!) a candle, and room for a bedtime tea are all that’s necessary for a good night sleep.

The wall you see when you enter the room was begging to be a gallery wall. Minted made it easy to fill a large space with beautiful pieces with varied looks, and they all arrived framed. Gallery walls always seem so intimidating. I can’t tell you how easy (and fun!) this was to put together.

If you have a room at the back of your house, or in a basement, or that otherwise struggles to get your home’s wifi signal, a range extender like this one might be just what you need. I appreciate this one’s outlet on the front— it blocks two, but at least you get one back.

I don’t believe in hiding televisions as a rule. Hiding this one from Samsung would be especially shameful, as it has a slim chrome bezel that adds a bit of polish to the room, and a razor-thin profile that makes it look like it’s floating on the wall. I christened it with an episode of Chef’s Table after we hung it: The TV has many Smart apps that make streaming media from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, YouTube and more easy… without an additional box.

That’s all she wrote! More coming up about the guest bedroom television and mattress this week and next.
