Instagram Notifications

Instagram is becoming the favorite, go-to social media platform for more and more people (including me!). But the bigger it becomes, the more changes the company rolls out. (It’s the normal evolution of an app. Remember the crazy hubbub around Facebook’s news feed changes?)

The biggest change was a shift in the algorithm that determines which posts show up in your feed. It used to be chronological. Now, Instagram applies a filter and shows you posts it thinks you want to see first. But how well does it really know you? Sometimes, not too well, and you miss posts from friends you would have loved to have seen.

Not to mention, as you follow more and more style icons and yogis doing handstands in far-flung places, how can you possibly keep up with all of them while also not missing out on the shots your #girlsquad and significant other are sure to bring up when you see them?

I’ve got a #FOMO solution, do don’t fret: Adjust your Instagram notifications, and you’ll be able to stay on top of every important snapshot. Here’s how:

turn on post notifications

The best way to avoid missing posts from people you really care about is to turn on push notifications for each of them.

  1. Go to that person’s account profile
  2. Tap the ellipsis icon (a row of three dots) in the top right-hand corner
  3. Tap “Turn on Post Notifications.”

Voila! Now you’ll get a notification on your phone every time they post something. Hopefully, they’re not at Disneyland posting 5 times per day, because that might be a little annoying (feel free to turn off their notification if that’s the case).

NOTE:
For this feature to work, you’ll have to go into your phone settings and make sure Push Notifications are turned on for Instagram.

For Android

Open your phone’s settings, scroll down and tap Apps > Instagram. Select the option to show notifications.

For iOS

Open your iPhone’s settings app, scroll down and tap Notifications. Tap Instagram, then turn on the setting to Allow Notifications.

more notifications

While we’re on the subject of notifications, you might want to tweak the rest of them to make sure you’re not getting too many, or too few.

  1. Go to your Profile page on Instagram (tap the icon that looks like a person in the lower right-hand corner)
  2. Click the wheel in the top right-hand corner
  3. Scroll down to Settings and tap “Push Notification Settings
  4. Turn on or off notifications that let you see new comments, new followers, likes, new direct messages, etc.

Instagram Notifications

Problem, solved. Now how will you keep up with those non-stop Snapchat stories? Sigh.

Do you use Instagram notifications? How have you kept up with friends on the social network? Do tell in the comments.
